We perform for love. Period. We work hard at it even to the point of insanity. Why? Because the world’s definition of love is not free. It has to be earned. It can be taken away in an instant if we no longer please “it”. The world’s love is actually no love at all. Deep down we know for a fact that this is true but are often too ashamed to admit it. So, what happens when we try to bring this same mindset into our relationship with God?
We protect ourselves from going too deep by becoming rule followers. Rule followers make one- sided deals with God. It feels safer that way. In a sense they tell Him, If I do this then You owe me to love and care for me. Right??? Wrong. If we are to be honest, that is not how he desires to relate to us. He wants us to be open and vulnerable to him. He wants us to trust him. God went so far as to write a book that spans thousands of years to show us that he loves us and he is trustworthy. Our relationship with him is not business as usual. As hard as it is to believe, God really, truly adores us. There are no games, tricks, or hoops to jump. Simply, love. It gets better. He is not a man so as to be convinced by anyone that we are unworthy of his affections. Romans 8:39 says,
“No power in the sky above or the earth below-indeed nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
When we allow ourselves to understand what this means and how this is no ordinary love story then we are set free and we are able to experience the life changing relationship with God that he has always intended for us.
